While Windows 11 is only in beta and Microsoft isn’t ending Windows 10 support until 2025, Frontline Managed Services Vice President of Operations Matthew Bares suggested that firm IT departments might start learning about Windows 11 sooner than later in a July 2, 2021 article for Legaltech News. Bares’ comments also headlined the July 7 ILTA newsletter.
“I would say as far as the IT departments are concerned at many law firms, as soon as Windows 11 is out for general use, I would start playing with it and understanding its limitations and challenges with software compatibility,” Bares said. However, small firms and solo practitioners without the resources to fully start the transition today may need to take a different approach, such as waiting for the training material and other applications to be fully compliant and compatible.
For small and large firms alike, however, the clock is already ticking with Microsoft ending support of Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. “The end of support is a real date,” he said. “What the Windows 7 end of date showed us is Microsoft is serious about these end of dates.
